Historians should feel free to talk about the past in the past tense. That’s what it’s there for. “When Lincoln arrives in Washington, he’s immediately confronted with the crisis at Fort Sumter”. No he isn’t. Maybe he was, but he isn’t right now. He’s dead. Someone shot him and he’d probably be dead by now even if they hadn’t. I think I’ve made my point.
